Title: My Soul to Take (Soul Screamer #1 Series)
Author: Rachel Vincent
She doesn’t see dead people. She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.
Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who’ll be next.
The story picks up from where My Soul to Lose left with Kaylee still unsure of why things are happening to her but she is certain that she is not crazy. She eventually meets Nash, a hot jock who hasn’t laid eyes on her until the night in Taboo. The two hit off and eventually Kaylee learns things from Nash that helped her realized and understand her situation and everything goes on from there.
That’s mostly the gist of the book – this is the story where Kaylee learns more about her kind and what they are capable off. What I love most of Vincent’s writing is that it is very straight forward, entertaining and never straining. The story didn’t drag and it wasn’t boring – it was actually very addicting that I ended up finishing the book faster than I have expected.
There are two points that irked me though. One, is Kaylee. I mean yes she’s strong yet vulnerable, intelligent, beautiful BUT majority of her character dwells from having angst and being hard headed. She’s very stubborn and irritating. Second is the love that materialized between Nash and Kaylee, no brainer there – that just doesn’t work for me. Because of those two reasons, this book somehow levels with 4 stars ratings – 1 star short to making it to 5 stars on my list, sigh! But asides that everything was great. Awesome plot, great concept for a story, pacing and story telling was ok and the ending was unexpected – I am definitely hooked! Looking forward to the next book of the series.
